SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 13, 2024) — The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) today announced a series of changes designed to improve public transit accessibility, affordability, sustainability and convenience. These changes take effect on Change Day, Aug. 18, 2024, and reflect UTA’s commitment to creating a more equitable transit system, providing cost savings and financial predictability for regular transit users.

After six successful years of Zero Fare on the six-minute Utah Valley Express (UVX), regular one-way fare of $2.50 and reduced fare of $1.25 will go into effect on Aug. 18. Collecting fare aligns with UTA’s legislated fare requirements and supports maintenance needs of the UVX service, including a new 900 East Provo UVX station under construction. To preserve route express frequency, UVX buses do not offer cash or electronic fare collection on board. Passengers can pre-pay their fare with electronic fare cards, including FAREPAY Cards, Transit app tickets, transfer tickets from bus or rail, and paper passes purchased from a retailer or at rideuta.com. UVX, and most UTA services, remain free to students, faculty and staff of educational institutions participating in the UTA School Pass Program, including Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, and to Eco Pass business partners by tapping on and off at platforms.

UTA is making route adjustments and introducing new methods to make public transit more affordable and predictable for frequent riders:

• Routes 472 and 473 return to regular southbound service on Beck Street to better serve community needs
• Fare capping replaces the existing 20% discount on FAREPAY Cards to ensure riders do not exceed a daily and weekly maximum fare
• Eligibility for income-based reduced fare will increase from 150% to 200% of the federal poverty level to increase access to reduced fare
